Details: This is a spectacular example of Victorian era repoussé  - a design hammered into the metal from the reverse side - with snakes surrounding, slithering and "breaking through" on both sides of the locket. The snakes have wonderfully detailed texture and present the illusion of movement. This functioning locket has a single interior frame which currently holds its original photo. This photo can be removed or covered up with another photo as we tend to leave the antique pieces as found. An edgy and chic piece, it is very striking when worn on its own but it could be mixed with other antique or modern pieces.

Historically snakes have always been revered as powerful symbols of rebirth and transformation, dating back to the early Egyptians. During the Victorian era serpent motifs came to symbolize eternal love. Snake jewelry became extremely popular in the mid-1800's due to widespread admiration for Queen Victoria's emerald-set snake engagement ring.

Measurements: The total length is just under 1 1/2", including the bale. The locket is just over 1" across. The weight is 9.4g.

Notes: The chain is sold separately.
